    Water Absorption Properties of Cement Pastes: Experimental and Modelling Inspections

    An intermingled fractal units’ model is shown in order to simulate pore microstructures as pore fraction and pore size distribution. This model is aimed at predicting capillary water absorption coefficient and sorptivity values in cement pastes. The results obtained are in good agreement with the experimental ones. For validating this model, a comparison with other procedures has been shown. It is possible to establish that the newly proposed method matches better with the experimental results. That is probably due to the fact that pore size distribution has been considered as a whole. Moreover, even though the proposed model is based on fractal base units, it is able to simulate and predict different properties as well as nonfractal porous microstructure

    Case studies on the influence of microstructure voids on thermal conductivity in fractal porous media

    Abstract Several studies have shown that fractal geometry is a tool that can replicate and investigate the nature of the materials and their physical properties. The Sierpinski carpet is often utilized to simulate porous microstructures. By using this geometric figure it is possible to study the influence of pore size distribution on deterministic fractal porous media. The determination of the thermal conductivity can be carried out using the electrical analogy. So, microstructure models have been converted in electrical fractal patterns. This fractal procedure is characterized by a close relationship with the actual microstructure and prevent papers has been validate it with experimental data in a series of former papers. In this work it is possible to show how thermal conductivity changes in relation to pore size distribution and geometric microstructure parameters

    Pore Size Distribution Influence on Suction Properties of Calcareous Stones in Cultural Heritage: Experimental Data and Model Predictions

    Water sorptivity symbolises an important property associated with the preservation of porous construction materials. The water movement into the microstructure is responsible for deterioration of different types of materials and consequently for the indoor comfort worsening. In this context, experimental sorptivity tests are incompatible, because they require large quantities of materials in order to statistically validate the results. Owing to these reasons, the development of analytical procedure for indirect sorptivity valuation from MIP data would be highly beneficial. In this work, an Intermingled Fractal Units' model has been proposed to evaluate sorptivity coefficient of calcareous stones, mostly used in historical buildings of Cagliari, Sardinia. The results are compared with experimental data as well as with other two models found in the literature. IFU model better fits experimental data than the other two models, and it represents an important tool for estimating service life of porous building materials

    The beneficial nutrients and biologically active ingredients extracted from plants have received great attention in the prevention and treatment of several diseases, including hypercholesterolemic, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, edema, joint pain, weight control, eye vision problems, neuroprotective effects, and asthma. Highly active ingredients predominantly exist in fruit and cladodes, known as phytochemicals (rich contents of minerals, betalains, carbohydrates, vitamins, antioxidants, polyphenols, and taurine), which are renowned for their beneficial properties in relation to human health. Polyphenols are widely present in plants and have demonstrated pharmacological ability through their antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant capacity, and the multi-role act of Opuntia ficus indica makes it suitable for current and future usage in cosmetics for moisturizing, skin improvement, and wound care, as healthful food for essential amino acids, as macro and micro elements for body growth, in building materials as an eco-friendly and sustainable material, as a bio-composite, and as an insulator. However, a more comprehensive understanding and extensive research on the diverse array of phytochemical properties of cactus pear are needed. This review therefore aims to gather and discuss the existing literature on the chemical composition and potential applications of cactus pear extracts, as well as highlight promising directions for future research on this valuable plant

    Analysis of Impact of ICT Solutions in International Freight Management

    The paper analyses a crucial problem in the international freight management and assesses the application of an innovative solution based on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools. In order to improve the customs clearance procedures, the paper analyses the main anomalies and bottlenecks related to international freight management of a case study by modelling the customs clearance activities in the Unified Modelling Language framework. Moreover, some novel ICT based solutions are proposed in order to optimize suited performance indices. The flow of goods and information involved in the case study is simulated in different scenarios in order to highlight the improvements reached by using ICT solutions. The simulation results point out the huge impact of ICT on customs clearance operations

    Grain boundary design based on fractal theory to improve intergranular corrosion resistance of TWIP steels

    The grain size in TWIP steel had a double fractal distribution, with a uniform diameter threshold of approximately 36 μm. Based on this threshold value, the grains were divided into fine and coarse grain sets. A good linear relationship was found between the fractal dimension of the fine grain set (Dg1) and the fraction of Σ3 gain boundaries (GBs) (FΣ3). The distribution characteristics of the three types of GBs satisfy multifractal and generalized fractal characteristics. Importantly, the fractal structural parameters of the Σ3 GBs control the distribution characteristics and complexity of the total grain boundary network (GBN). Combined corrosion test, a quantitative relationship between the corrosion thickness loss and the Σ3 GBs fractal parameter as well as corrosion time was established. In the end, the optimal microstructure characteristics for improving the intergranular corrosion resistance of TWIP steel are discussed from the GB perspective. GB design based on fractal theory provides a promising solution to optimize material corrosion properties through analyzing complex GBN

    Pyridostigmine in pediatric Intestinal pseudo-obstruction. case report of a 2-year old girl and literature review

    Pediatric chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction is a rare disorder characterized by a severe impairment of gastrointestinal motility leading to intestinal obstruction symptoms in the absence of mechanical causes. The diagnosis is usually clinical and diagnostic work is usually aimed to rule out mechanical obstruction and to identify any underlying diseases. Treatment is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary effort. In this manuscript we describe the youngest child successfully treated with the orally administrable, longacting, reversible anti-cholinesterase drug, pyridostigmine. Like other drugs belonging to cholinesterase inhibitors, pyridostigmine enhances gut motility by increasing acetylcholine availability in the enteric nervous system and neuro-muscular junctions. Based on the direct evidence from the reported case, we reviewed the current literature on the use of pyridostigmine in severe pediatric dysmotility focusing on intestinal pseudo-obstruction. The overall data emerged from the few published studies suggest that pyridostigmine is an effective and usually well tolerated therapeutic options for patients with intestinal pseudo-obstruction. More specifically, the main results obtained by pyridostigmine included marked reduction of abdominal distension, reduced need of parenteral nutrition, and improvement of oral feeding. The present case and review on pyridostigmine pave the way for eagerly awaited future randomized controlled studies testing the efficacy of cholinesterase inhibitors in pediatric severe gut dysmotility

    A metamodelling approach for performance evaluation of intermodal transportation networks

    The paper proposes a metamodelling procedure devoted to provide a reference model to be used by decision makers in the performance evaluation of Intermodal Transportation Network (ITN). In order to obtain a generic model describing a nonspecific ITN from the structural and behavioural point of view, the metamodelling approach consists in applying a top down and modular procedure. The model is specified by the well known Unified Modelling Language (UML), a graphic and textual modelling formalism intended to describe systems from structural and dynamics viewpoints. Hence, the paper models a generic ITN starting from the network description and shows by a case study the metamodel of one of the most important nodes that compose it: the port subsystem. Moreover, the case study model is translated in a simulation software and the performance measures obtained by the simulation results are shown
